Cloud Forest School is a bilingual K-6 school in Santa Elena, Costa Rica serving approximately 85% local Costa Rican students and 15% international students.
We are a committed team of educators working to create the next generation of sustainably minded, culturally aware and socially just young people.
The Cloud Forest School welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds and abilities. We offer Spanish as a second language course, a homestay with a local Costa Rican family, and the opportunity to grow and learn alongside a diverse group of people. We are looking for people committed to serious work in a fun educational environment.
When applying, we ask that you be ready to provide a letter of interest, a current resume and a clean criminal background check.
We are happy to tailor a program to your interests and experience.
Teacher/Teaching Assistant
We are looking for a few teaching assistants to support our loving and innovative classrooms, assist with curriculum design, extracurricular activities and present your skills and passions to our school. You must have professional experience working with children or currently studying education.
We offer Spanish as a second language course, on-the-job training and an amazing environment to contribute to our environmentally focused bilingual education.
We welcome Spanish or English speaking applicants!
The minimum commitment is 2 months and a consistent schedule between 8 am and 3 pm Monday through Thursday.
School and curriculum development
We are looking for experienced teachers and education specialists who can help us develop and integrate our curriculum and implement best practices for school and teacher development.
Minimum stay one month, flexible schedule, minimum 20 hours per week.
Landscaping, Reforestation, Trail Maintenance.
Help us keep the 100+ pristine acres of Cloud Forest School grounds thriving, beautiful and safe for the students and the community we serve.
Come get your fingers dirty and learn the basics of permaculture and sustainable gardening in our food-producing gardens, hydroponic and aquaculture systems, and native plant nurseries.
Learn about local rainforest ecology in one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, while helping to reforest areas of the property. And, whether you’re putting your strength into an on-campus project or the nearly 10 miles of trails, team up and sweat with us to keep our grounds in good shape for years to come.
Fundraising support.
We are looking for passionate individuals with experience or currently studying fundraising management. We need support for our fundraising efforts to support our scholarship program as well as our capital campaign to maintain and update our nearly 30-year-old campus.
Grant and foundation research, grant writing, implementation of successful outreach practices, including direct mail, telecommunications, social media are areas that would be valuable to us. Minimum stay one month, flexible schedule, minimum 20 hours per week.
Presentations and Demonstrations.
If you have a passion that you would like to share with our students, we would love to have you come and give a presentation or demonstration. Whether it’s yoga, martial arts, some fun facts and information about your home country, the importance of recycling, engineering concepts or a fun art project, we’d love to have you share it.

Sue Gabrielson
Co- Director
Sue pasó su primer tiempo prolongado en Monteverde en 2016, como voluntaria en la biblioteca del Centro de Educación CREATIVA Cloud Forest School, mientras sus hijas asistían al séptimo y al undécimo grado.
Más tarde ese año se mudó a Monteverde de forma permanente y enseñó humanidades en la escuela secundaria en Monteverde Friends School (MFS). Después de un año de enseñanza, fue contratada como directora de la escuela de MFS en 2017. Antes de eso, la Rev. Sue (como la llamaban cariñosamente después de convertirse en ministra unitaria universalista ordenada) sirvió como pastora en iglesias en Maine durante 20 años.
También ha organizado campañas políticas para la atención médica como un derecho humano, el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo y el cambio climático, ha enseñado en universidades y ha formado parte de muchas juntas comunitarias.
Tiene dos maestrías, una en Educación de Adultos y otra en Divinidad, es ABD en un programa de Doctorado en Servicios Humanos Multidisciplinarios.
Sue ha trabajado en administración de educación superior y navegó tres veces en el Programa Semester at Sea.
Tiene dos hijas: Grace y Ellie (ambas graduadas de MFS) y está casada con Ulises Salazar Leiton.
Le encanta leer, jugar al billar, caminar, las aguas termales y otras actividades al aire libre.
