As its name implies, the Cloud Forest School is an educational institution which is intrinsically connected to the rare and beautiful biological phenomenon that is the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The Monteverde zone alone is home to over 3,000 flowering plants and ferns and 500 species of orchids – all of which play a vital role in supporting the rare butterflies, birds and mammals found here. Despite the fact that our campus and many other private and national reserves in Costa Rica protect sections of cloud forest, many acres have been deforested for agricultural purposes and this loss of forest is threatening many rare and unique species of flora and fauna.
By educating the children of Monteverde about the diversity and importance of the cloud forest, we work to ensure that they will learn to value and preserve this endangered ecosystem. As one of the main objectives for the school, we work to provide as much funding in scholarships as possible and thus to provide educational services to as many local children as we can. This year, 76% of our local students are receiving full or partial scholarships in order to attend the Cloud Forest School.
